The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University
The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (SAHZU), located in Hangzhou, is one of China's premier tertiary hospitals. Founded in 1869 as Guangji Hospital by British missionaries, it ranks among the earliest Western-style hospitals in China. Renamed in 1985 and adopted its current name in 1998 upon merging with Zhejiang University, the hospital carries a legacy spanning over 150 years.
SAHZU operates two major campuses—Jiefang Road and Binjiang—with over 3,200 beds and more than 4,000 staff members, handling over 4 million outpatient visits annually. The hospital is nationally distinguished for its clinical strengths, most notably ophthalmology, consistently ranked among the top in China, along with orthopedics, neurosurgery, cardiovascular medicine, and emergency medicine—the latter designated as a national key clinical specialty. SAHZU also excels in organ transplantation, minimally invasive surgery, and critical care.
